Roles Available We will also be casting an ensemble for singing, dancing, and some dialogue.
Many of the below roles will also be a part of the ensemble - the only characters who will definitely not be in the ensemble are Bernadette, Tick and Adam. The final cast size will likely be between 16 to 18 people.
The ensemble helps to fill smaller roles and to set the tone and the energy for the show, which is incredibly important.
Name Gender Vocal Range Description Bernadette Bassenger MF A2 to E4 Bernadette is a transgender woman who embodies Old Hollywood charm and wit. Tendency toward deadpan humour but able to dive into camp. Bernadette goes on an emotional journey over the course of the show and demonstrates immense sensitivity and heart. Part of the three principal drag performers. Any ethnicity.
Played by Terence Stamp in the original film.
Age 40-60
Please note that although the role calls for a male actor, auditioners of all gender expressions and assignments will be considered. Anthony "Tick" Belrose M A2 to E4 Tick has built an established career as a drag queen in Sydney, Australia. At the beginning of the show, he is contacted by his estranged wife, Marion, who asks him to perform his drag cabaret at a hotel in Alice Springs - and more importantly, to meet his 8-year-old son. Any ethnicity.
Played by Hugo Weaving in the original film.
Age 30-40 Adam "Felicia" Whitely M C3 to Bb4 The youngest of the principal trio, Adam is brash and outspoken, and this tends to get him into trouble. He says and does whatever he wants to in the moment, and this both creates conflict among his friends and creates high-risk situations in some of the towns they visit. Any ethnicity.
Played by Guy Pearce in the original film.
Age 20-30 Bob M B2 to A3 A mechanic whom the trio encounters in a small town along the journey. Bob is in the last days of a loveless marriage and develops a sweet fascination with Bernadette (Bob saw Bernadette perform as part of a show many years ago.) Needs to be lovable despite the conflicts with his wife early on. Any ethnicity.
Age 40-60 Marion F Spoken Tick's estranged wife, Marion is the entertainment manager of a hotel in Alice Springs. She is strong and forthright. Although she and Tick are estranged, the dynamic between them is amicable and she does want Tick and Benji to meet (though she is comfortable and confident as a single mother). Any ethnicity.
Age 30-40
(Likely sings with ensemble) Cynthia F Speak-singing Cynthia is Bob's wife; a Filipina woman who has burlesque aspirations of her own, which embarrasses Bob. The marriage is loveless to the point where neither seems to even like the other anymore.
Cynthia has one solo performance in a somewhat burlesque style. There is no nudity but it is risqué in terms of content.
Please note that due to thematic material and plot requirements, this role will be cast from auditioners able to convincingly portray a character of Asian descent.
Age 25-40
(Likely sings with ensemble) The Divas F F3 to C5 Many of the powerhouse songs in this show are performed by The Divas, meant to evoke many of the iconic women of music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.
These performers will also be a part of the Female Ensemble and may have featured roles elsewhere in the show.
Any age Miss Understanding M Fabulous drag queen with comic hosting ability. Miss Understanding helps to set up the tone of the show at the beginning. Any ethnicity.
Age 20-40 Benjamin (Benji) MF Tick's son. Benji has never met his father. Marion has raised Benji to be a sweet and open minded young boy who is supportive of his Father’s lifestyle. Although Tick has not seen him for many years their reunion is pivotal and endearing.
Character age is 8-12. Adult performers who can convincingly play a young child is encouraged to audition. Shirley F G3 to G4 Rough around the edges waitress in a country bar. Does not take kindly to the trio who come in in full drag. Able to deliver tense conflict and broad comedy.
Age 35-50 Frank M Spoken Tough miner in a small town. Bigoted and potentially violent.
Age 20-35
(Likely sings with ensemble) Jimmy M Jimmy is an Indigenous Australian who shows tourists around the outback. Charming and kind with a good sense of humour. Doesn't take himself or the others too seriously, and seems to enjoy the drag queens.
Please note that due to thematic material and plot requirements, this role will be cast from auditioners able to convincingly portray an Indigenous Australian character.
